St
Lawrence Church

Built in 1877 for £1,555, by Mr Wild Stammers, on a high point
overlooking the River Blackwater. The Church is sometimes called St
Lawrence New lands.
Three generations of the Wedgewood Benn family lie
beneath the floor of the chancel including the Lord Stansgate, father of
the politician Anthony Wedgwood Benn.
The church was called Newlands as the original church was built on land newly
taken from the great forest in 1189.
