VILLAGE INDEX

St Lawrence Church

Built in 1877 for £1,555, by Mr Wild Stammers, on a high point overlooking the River Blackwater. The Church is sometimes called St Lawrence  New lands.

Three generations of the Wedgewood Benn family lie beneath the floor of the chancel including the  Lord Stansgate, father of the politician Anthony Wedgwood Benn.
The church was called Newlands as the original church was built on land newly taken from the great forest in 1189.

 Beacons

St Lawrence has two beacons erected as part of a nation-wide system of beacons.

One stands on the high point of the village near to the Church and the other is sited on the beach.
