 CHURCHES
Individual village sites give details of the local Parish Churches many of which are well worth a visit. However no visit to Dengie 100 is complete without a visit to St Peters Chapel which was built by St Cedd in AD654.

St Cedd was a missionary to Ireland before the fall of Rome .

After the Romans left Britain the Saxons colonised the Country and Anglo Saxon Britain emerged.

The Country was controlled by many Kings ruling over small areas and paganism took a hold on the country.
In 653AD St Cedd was sent by Pope Gregory to carry out missionary work with the Anglo-Saxons in Eastern England.
No doubt attracted by the efficient roman road linking Othona to the rest of the Country St Cedd landed at Bradwell.

By this time Othona was ruined and provided building material to construct a Cathedral which St Cedd named Ythancaestir. 

The missionary work spread to churches at Prittlewell, Mersea,Tilbury and a monastery at Lastinghamin Yorkshire.

The Cathedral continued to thrive until St Cedd succumbed to the plague on a visit to Lastingham in 664 .

St Peters is open daily during hours of daylight.

The Burnham on Crouch and District Museum is situated on the Quay at the junction with Coronation Road. It is devoted to the history of the Dengie Hundred area.

NATURE RESERVES
Virtually the whole of the coast is classified as an area of special scientific interest boasting flora and bird life found in few other places in the UK.

Asheldham Pits
35 acres of varied habitats fashioned around a disused gravel pit.

Seal Colony      01702 258600
The Crouch estuary is home to many seals who are to be seen basking on the sandbanks. Regular boat trips will take you to see the seals.

Tillingham is a small village with Essex Weatherboard houses clustered around the ancient village green.

Bradwell on Sea is a larger village with an olde world feel to the High Street - Don't miss the village lock up and stocks in the church wall.
