Bradwell Nuclear Power Station

 

Bradwell was the site for one of the first nuclear power stations which was constructed in 1957 on a design by Maurice Bebb.

The power station stopped generating power in 2002 and is in the middle of its decommissioning process.

The two main blocks housing the turbines and reactors will be in place for some years to come.

The Sea Fort of Othona was built by the Romans as part of a the coastal defences.

Bradwell Lodge

A Tudor house with exposed Tudor beams in the main hall.


In 1781-1786 the building was extended by John Johnson for the  rector Sir Henry Bate Dudley .

The interior was fitted with the finest decorations believed to be the work of Robert Adams, Robert Smirke and Angelica Kauffman who were amongst the finest artisans of their generation.


More recently Bradwell Lodge was home to Tom Driberg who was a prominent
Labour MP

St Thomas Church Bradwell

The original Parish Church in Bradwell was built in the fourteenth century .The church was added to over the years with the Tower added in 1706 and the nave and chancel renewed in 1864.
The East end of the nave is an early 16th century brick gable.
Several of the original 14th century head-stops are set into the 19th century east window.
The font, which dates from the 14th century, is an octagonal bowl with four ugly heads reaching up from the stem.
Several brasses survive- the oldest of which, is found on the north wall of the chancel, dates from 1526 in memory of Margaret Wyott.

Bradwell Mounting Steps

Built into the walls of the Church are a block of five stone steps at the top of which is an iron post.
These steps were for the benefit of the wealthy churchgoers who arrived for service by carriage or horseback.

Bradwell Lock Up

In 1817 a village lock up was built in East End Road, Bradwell to house people arrested by the Parish Constable.

Stocks and a pillory were added so that justice could also be administered.

The lock up is one of the best preserved lock ups to be found in the County

  Bradwell Saxon Weir

At Low tide a number of wooden stakes are uncovered in the mud of the Blackwater Estuary.

These are the remains of a wooden fish trap built by the Saxons in the 7th Century. I

investigation by archaeologists show that up to 20,000 stakes can be found on the site

Hub of the local Coastguard station with two coastguard's patrol vehicles and a fast Rib based at Bradwell
